PULMONOLOGY
NHI is a nationally acclaimed centre for the standards of care for diseases of the lungs and other respiratory disorders. Comprehensive multi-disciplinary care is provided by physicians, nurses, physical therapists and social workers. Sleep Lab - Polysomnography is a definitive tool for diagnosing various types of sleep disorders including Narcolepsy, Restless Legs Syndrome, REM behaviour disorders, Parasomnias and Sleep Apnoea.
SLEEP LAB
Polysomnography is used to diagnose or rule out many types of sleep disorders including narcolepsy, restless legs syndrome, REM behaviour disorder, parasomnias, and sleep apnoea. It is a diagnostic test during which a number of physiologic variables are measured and recorded during sleep. Physiologic sensor leads are placed on the patient in order to record:- Brain electrical activity: EEG for sleep architecture
- Eye and jaw muscle movement: EOG and EMG
- Leg muscle movement: Leg EMG
- Airflow: Detection of Apnoea
- Respiratory effort: Differentiation between obstructive and central apnoea
- EKG: Cardiac activity
- Oxygen saturation: Oxygen desaturation during apnoea
Information gathered from all leads is fed into a computer and outputted as a series of waveform tracings which enable the physician to visualize the various waveforms, assign a score for the test, and assist in the diagnostic process.
