Seven lakh children require open -
heart surgeries in India. It is estimated that nearly
75,000 children out of the 18 million born every year
suffer from heart diseases at birth. Only a small
percentage of these children get expert medical advice
while majority of them cannot afford the cost of the
surgery , because of the high cost involved.
Rotary came forward to reach out
to those poor children and "Gift of Life"
project was launched in India towards end of 2002.
Under Gift of Life project, many poor children have
been treated successfully.
National Heart Institute has
joined hands with Rotary for this project in Delhi. So
far nine children have been operated for various kinds
of heart problems. These children are from different
parts of India.
Going forward we plan to operate
100 children in next one year. Any individual /
organization who come across needy children with heart
problems can email the request at contact@nhi.in
