Prevent
Heart Attack / Stroke / Cancer
Have an
Executive Medical Check Up
The old adage "Prevention is better than
Cure" is more relevant than ever today.
The phenomenal increase in cost of patient care,
medical & surgical, the man days lost due
to sickness and early death in the prime of
life have made even the most affluent countries
worried and launch preventive programmes on
a large scale.
The causes of death and of illness today in
all affluent and semi-affluent societies (including
India) approximately are: heart disease and
stroke 48%, Cancer 22%, accidents 4% and others,
including infections 26% in that order below
the age of 65. Heart disease and strokes top
the list and are far above other causes including
cancer. Fortunately, enough is known about these
diseases to start preventive programmes even
though there is insufficient knowledge for their
cure. The trend today is to have frequent simple
checkups even when the person is in apparent
good health. It is even more relevant in person
in the high risk groups- i.e. those with a family
history of heart disease, diabetes and high
blood pressure.
Between the age of 20 and 25, there should be
a comprehensive physical check up as the person
is now an adult, to determine basal data on
height, weight, blood pressure levels and bio-chemical
parameters of blood sugar, lipids etc. After
this a regular checkup once in two years or
so is desirable. From the age 40 onwards an
annual checkup is recommended so that any undesirable
characteristics can be corrected and presence
of serious disease detected.
Many types of heart disease and cancer are considered
preventable today. A simple elucidation of life
style characteristics, smoking, drinking and
exercise habits, a complete physical examination,
essential bio-chemical and blood tests; X-ray
of the chest, ECG, pulmonary function test,
ENT and eye tests and PAP smear and mammography
in the case of women are all that is needed,
and can be completed in 24-48 hours. These simple
tests will enable the detection of early signs
of heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes,
kidney disease and cancer. Referral can be made
to appropriate authority in case any disease
is detected.
The National Heart Institute offers two types
of executive check ups – General
and Comprehensive. Such checkups
relate only to adults and are advised once a
year or at least once in two years.
General Executive Check-up includes physical
examination, X-ray chest, ECG, essential bio-chemical
tests, urine examination, eye, ENT checkup and
pulmonary function test.
The comprehensive checkup includes physical
examination, X-ray chest, ECG, essential bio-chemical
tests, including extended lipid profile, urine
examination, Echo, abdominal ultrasound, eye,
ENT checkup and pulmonary function test.
• If TMT is also done, it will be charged
extra at concessional rate under both schemes.
• PAP smear and mammography in the case
of women will be charged extra under both schemes.
