The National Heart Institute has distinguished itself as a remarkable centre for adult and paediatric cardiac surgeries. The expertise at the institute has achieved an unprecedented rate of success in high-risk cases of multiple arterial blockages. Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery (CABG) is now the mainstay of the treatment of Ischaemic heart disease. Of long, the NHI has been using triple/ total arterial grafts using both the internal mammaries, radial arteries and the gastro-epiploeic arteries, the use of which is very rare indeed. Patients with severe three-vessel disease and patients with poor heart function have also benefited from these procedures. Patients with narrowed or leaking heart valves often develop heart failure due to the accumulation of fluid in the lungs. The valves are either repaired or replaced with mechanical or tissue valves.
Children born with defects like a hole-in-the-heart or an abnormal connection within the heart are also surgically treated with excellent results. Surgeons at NHI have been specially trained on children and neonates of low birth weight with these defects. This facility for children is available in very few centers throughout India - Private or Government.
National Heart Institute surgeons have engaged in a new era of cardiac surgery that promises to significantly improve treatment of the most common forms of heart diseases by introducing minimally invasive technology with a view to achieving results that are safe, precise and reproducible and with significant benefits to the patient in terms of decreased postoperative pain, recovery time, costs and over all results.
